• R. L. Shep Ethnic Textiles Book Award 2011, Splendor and Pageantry: Textile Treasures from the Armenian Orthodox Churches of Istanbul.
  The Textile Society of America is very pleased to announce the winner of the 2011 R. L. Shep Ethnic Textiles Book Award to
  Splendor and Pageantry: Textile Treasures from the Armenian Orthodox Churches of Istanbul by Ronald Marchese,Marlene Breu and the Armenian Patriarchate of Istanbul (Citlembik Publications, 2011).  The award was recently presented at the TSA symposium, Textiles & Politics, held in Washington D.C., September 19-23, 2012.

  Splendor and Pageantry is a lavishly illustrated volume and represents the first-ever, in-depth examination of the Armenian textiles housed in the treasury of the Armenian Patriarchate in Istanbul, Turkey.
  The collection features artifacts dating back some 300 years and includes embroidered liturgical vestments, altar curtains, copes and miters gathered from the churches that served the Armenian community.  Richly embroidered silks and velvets are embellished with gold and silver threads and pearls and feature a variety of motifs including minutely detailed crucifixion motifs.  The volume represents a unique and important contribution to the study of textiles, Armenian history, and the material culture of religion.
  Given annually to a publication judged to be the best book in the field of ethnic textile studies, the award consists of a cash prize funded by an endowment established by R. L. Shep in 2000.  The purpose of this award is to encourage the study and understanding of textile traditions by recognizing and rewarding exceptional scholarship. The endowment is administered by the Textile Society of America through the R. L. Shep Award Committee. 
  The 2011/12 committee was composed of Lee Talbot, Claire Odland, and Kate Irvin (Chair).

  Die Schweizer Perspektive brachte URSULA KARBACHER (St. Gallen) mit in die Tagung ein. Dabei ging sie der St. Gallener Stickereigeschichte auf den Grund, die wirtschaftlich mit dem ländlichen Oberschwaben eng verwoben ist. So fasste um die Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts, als die Leinwandproduktion in der Krise steckte, die Stickerei als Handarbeit auf Initiative findiger Kaufleute in St.Gallen Fuß und wurde durch kaufmännisches Engagement auf der Basis des Verlagssystems auf das Umland, aber auch auf Vorarlberg und Schwaben ausgeweitet. In Heimarbeit wurden besonders im Oberallgäuer Gebiet die aus St. Gallen stammenden vorbedruckten Musseline und Garne zu fertigen Stickarbeiten veredelt und nach Frankreich sowie in andere Länder Europas exportiert. Das bereits 1886 eröffnete Textilmuseum in St.Gallen, das auch 2.000 Musterbücher zur Stickerei verwahrt, hat sich der Dokumentation der Hand- und auch der Maschinenstickerei verschrieben.

  In der ehemaligen Stiftskirche St. Leonhard in Frankfurt hat sich ein reicher Schatz an liturgischen Geräten und Textilien erhalten, der hier erstmals in seiner Gesamtheit auf der Grundlage eingehender Quellenstudien publiziert wird. Daraus resultieren aufschlussreiche Erkenntnisse zur Frankfurter Stadtgeschichte.
  Der Bestand umfasst an die achtzig Gold- und Silberschmiedewerke und ebenso viele kostbare liturgische Gewänder, die zum Teil aus Hofkleidern des 18. Jh. entstanden sind. Die prachtvollsten Geräte und Paramente stammen aus der Karmeliterkirche, deren liturgische Ausstattung im frühen 19. Jh. von der Leonhardskirche übernommen wurde. Der Einführung in die Geschichte des Kirchenschatzes und in seine kunsthistorischen Besonderheiten schließt sich ein ausführlicher Katalog zu den liturgischen Geräten und Textilien an.
