Kunstfertigkeit. Inwieweit für die Vorzeichnungen, die
sich etwa bei den beiden Katharinen- und
Elisabeth-Legende Fragmenten gut erkennen lassen,
It is thought that the convents where pieces of
embroidery have been preserved to this day were also, in
fact, the centres where embroidery was produced. The
important production of textiles embroidered in needle
painting with wool in the convents of Ebstorf, Wienhausen
and Lüne is remarquable even today. Most likely the
convents specialized in this particular handicraft,
acquiring exquisite mastery in it. The question as to
whether professional painters were hired to do the
preparatory drawings, such as the ones that are clearly
visible on the fragments of the tapestry of the legend of
Catherine and Elizabeth, remains open. Only an analysis
based on stylistic attributions can ascertain this. The two tapestry fragments with the story of Catherine and Elizabeth were certainly used as wall hangings. Their pendant is to be found in the tapestry with the legend of Anne and Elizabeth at Wienhausen. Comparable pieces depict other biblical subjects, or stories inspired by contemporary literature (such as the epic of Tristan). In both instances, a didactic and moral lesson governed the iconographic programm. It is established that in the convent of Lüne, during the period of the reformist trends, the young mother superior Sophia von Bodendik encouraged the nuns to embroider colourful tapestries as well narrow bands to hang on the back of seats, of which the oldest example is dated 1492. The tapestries were certainly exposed during the annual liturgical cycle, the Sibyls and Prophets during Advent, the Tree of Jesse at Christmas and for Marian celebrations, etc. The seat tapestries presenting the lives of the convents patron saints, Catherine, Bartholomew and George, of which two examples are preserved in the Kestner Museum in Hannover, might well also have been hung on the back of the choir stalls during liturgical festivals. The representations favour the scenes of the lives of the saints, preferably depicting their divine visions, as well as those of Christs Passion. This choice emphasized compassion in line with Devotio moderna and the ensuing monastic reform. Hence the embroidering nuns contributed to the enhancement of their surroundings all the while reliving the sacred Passion through meditation. Eckhard Michael has also detected a mystic influence («Bildstickereien aus Kloster Lüne», in Diözese Hildesheim in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart, vol. 53, 1985, p. 67-78) when the bridal mystique was highlighted in the legend of Catherine.
