From conception to reception, costume has the potential to complicate political, moral, and aesthetic systems that flatten costumes into bodies and bodies into costumes. Whether acts of cultural appropriation or the apparent invisibility of costume designers and makers within the analysis of bodily art practices, the intersection between ethical relativism and the potential for costume to claim bodies – to (dis)empower, enact politics, or be risky – exposes the critical territory and social paradoxes that acts of costuming negotiate.
For Critical Costume 2018, we ask what are the principal opportunities and challenges that the provocation(s) of ‘costume ethics’ poses to designers, artists, and scholars. We approach the peculiarity of costume as a liminal method of appearance that is consciously designed and performed. Consequently, we invite contributions that debate the permissibility, authorship, or risk of costume and costuming.

In our panel we aim to take a closer look at the visual representation of empresses and queens. While Marion Romberg (Vienna) concentrates on the 17th century, Christine Engelke (Munich) puts emphasis on contemporary images. In order to give a complete overview of the modern art history, we are interested in studies that deal with female monarchs in the 19th century.
The questions we would like to focus on are: How did their public image look like? Did it differ from the visual representation of the male ruler?

  • 26 to 27 June 2018 Session Celebrating Female Agency in the Arts , Yale University and Paris Spies-Gans, Princeton University , New York, USA
    Info -
This interdisciplinary panel explores ways in which elite women wielded power through the active fusion of politics and art. Domestic and other private spaces often provided fertile ground for the cultivation of wide-ranging artistic production. In these spaces, women made decisions that both mirrored and diverged from the (often public) actions of their male contemporaries.
    - A second theme strand centres on the relationship of Art Nouveau works and artists with politics,
    - while the third strand explores the importance of drug use and/or attitudes towards sex in Art Nouveau artists.
    - A final section on research and doctoral theses in progress completes the programme.

  • 13 to 16 June 2018 Women's Creativity since the Modern Movement (1918 - 2018)
After almost four years of successful project activities, and in accordance with the MoMoWo mission, the International Conference | Women’s Creativity since the Modern Movement (1918-2018): Toward a New Perception and Reception continues to increase the visibility of creative women, to foster in Europe and beyond interdisciplinary and multicultural approaches to the study of the built environment "from the spoon to the city", and to facilitate the exchange of research results and professional practices in the fields of architecture, civil engineering and design. Though the scope of the project is European, the scholarly and professionals communities are invited to submit papers related not only to Europe’sgeographical framework but also its transcontinental aspects. The main purpose of the MoMoWo Symposium is to map the general state of research about tangible and intangible cultural heritage created by women in 100 years, in order to give a new impetus to broaden studies in Europe and beyond. MoMoWo’s Scientific Committee defined seven main topics in order to achieve a thematic balance able to provide an extensive oversight of the academic researches and professional experiences.

  • 14 to 16 June 2018 Designästhetik: Theorie und soziale Praxis
Die Tagung will u.a.

  • 4 to 6 June 2018 The Cultural Heritage of Europe @ 2018
Today's globalized concept of cultural heritage is often understood as a product of European modernity with its 19th-century emergence of territorially fixed nation-states and collective identity constructions. Within the theoretical overlap of the disciplines of history (of art), archaeology and architecture cultural properties and built monuments were identified and embedded into gradually institutionalized protection systems. In the colonial context up to the mid-20th century this specific conception of cultural heritage was transferred to non-European contexts, internationalized in the following decades after the WWII and taken as universal.
Postcolonial, postmodern and ethnically pluralistic viewpoints did rightly question the supposed prerogative of a European Leitkultur. Only rather recently did critical heritage studies engage with the conflicting implications of progressively globalized standards of cultural heritage being applied in very local, non-European and so-called 'traditional' contexts. However, in order to bridge what academia often tends to essentialize as a 'Western' and 'non-Western' divide of opposing heritage conceptions, a more balanced viewpoint is also needed in order to update the conceptual foundations of what 'cultural heritage of/in Europe' means today.

  • 17 to 19 May 2018 Fashion and Clothing in European Museums: Collection, Research, Exhibition - The Museum of Alsace, Strasbourg/Haguenau, France
This interdisciplinary international conference 'Fashion and dress collection, exhibition and research in small and medium sized museums in Europe' will focus on the challenges and potentials that lie within museums considered small or medium sized in their national museum contexts. These museums often have to cater to a diverse range of interests including their public, regional and local authorities, state interests in national heritage issues, as well as academic concerns.
The conference will be devoted to an account of the discussion of the recent revitalisation of dress and textile collections in the museums of Strasbourg, Haguenau, Bouxwiller and several others. This conference will then, over the next two days go on to probe the functions of museums of art, industry, fashion, ethnography and history which have collections of textiles and dress - whether these form their entire collections or just elements within them. The heritage that these museums carry relative to their size, their spheres of influence and their collecting policies, is often unique and very different from that of our larger museum institutions, raising specific issues which lie at the heart of debates which will be developed at this conference.

  • 12 April 2018 Textile and Place Conference 2018
The conference hosted by Manchester School of Art and the Whitworth draws upon Manchester past histories and contemporary associations with textile linked to place.
Textile as a socially dynamic, communicative and active material offers a rich seam of enquiry into how textile participates and influences how we live. This conference seeks to examine how textiles connects with the idea of place in its histories, its production, sustainable future ecologies and in its narratives of migration, sociability and politics.
Textiles as materials are deeply linked to certain places, with associated specialist skills. They signify the nature of cultural identity, particularly relevant in the current socio-economic, political and global developments with Beyond Borders, an exhibition on South Asian textiles on at the Whitworth, providing context to this discussion.

The Weaver’s Workshop: Materiality, craft and efficacies in the art of tapestry. Tapestry is a complex and expensive medium. From the Middle Ages production of tapestry incorporated a complicated and costly manufacturing process that involved diverse media (drawing and weaving), and which therefore required multi-professional teams of artists, both local and international, to endow these artefacts with a variety of motifs in elaborate compositions.
This session will investigate specific aspects of tapestry, both as an artwork and as a high-end product of industrial production via discussion that is interdisciplinary in its look out.
We invite papers that consider the development and innovations in tapestry production arising from changes in technology and in aesthetic taste, such as, for example, colour treatment.
We are also interested in the question of how such alterations impacted on the function of tapestries, whether they were the cause of the declining interest in and status of tapestry as art in industrial revolution, and how we can explain tapestry’s revival in Modernism.

Object biographies have been understood in both highly concrete terms as the history of relocating artefacts and retracing their physical changes and as abstract models or metaphors for outlining relationships between people and their environment. When considering objects and material culture, object biography or life-span has become a concept encompassing a broad, multidisciplinary and diffuse field of research. The history, evolution and uses of this term have varied and have been of wide scope. The term has come to bridge various disciplines including anthropology, archaeology, art history, conservation studies, craft studies, ethnology, history, museology, the natural sciences and sociology.

  • Circulating Crafts - 24 January 2018 Paris France
21 February 2018 Los Angeles (USA)
Circulation and imitation of cultural products are key factors in shaping the material world – as well as identities. Many objects or techniques that came to be seen as local, authentic, and typical are in fact entangled in complex transnational narratives tied to a history of imperialism, and the commercial phenomenon of supply and demand. In the 17th and 18th centuries, artists and craftspeople in Europe appropriated foreign techniques such as porcelain, textiles, or lacquers that eventually shaped local European identities. During the 19th century, Western consumers looked for genuine goods produced outside of industry, and the demand of Bourgeois tourism created a new market of authentic souvenirs and forgeries alike. Furthermore, the 20th century saw the (re)-emergence of local "Schools" of art and crafts as responses to political changes, anthropological research, and/or tourist demand. This multi-parts conference will explore how technical knowledge, immaterial desires, and political agendas impacted the production and consumption of visual and material culture in different times and places. A new scrutiny of this back and forth between demanders and suppliers will allow us to map anew a multidirectional market for cultural goods in which the source countries could be positioned at the center.

The debate surrounding luxury continues in so much as there are more questions than answers where definitions of luxury are concerned. In addition, there is much more debate surrounding social responsibility, the origin of materials and manufacture, the inclusion of technology, the retail environment and disposable products. We continue to ask ourselves whether traditional definitions of luxury are relevant in today’s global marketplace and how the contemporary luxury market addresses change through addressing shifts in consumer habits. Mass production remains the focus of global luxury brands, however there has been shift in customer loyalty, the introduction on ‘limited’ editions of products and the introduction of ‘salons’ to enhance the value added to the retail and shopping experience.
Advances in technology continue to challenge the status-quo where innovation in manufacture, customisation and materials are concerned and an increase in value attributed to craftsmanship may be pushing both industry and academics to redefine contemporary concepts and interpretations of luxury.

Caroline of Ansbach (1683–1737), Augusta of Saxe-Gotha (1719–1772), and Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1744–1818), three Protestant German princesses, became variously Princess of Wales, Queen Consort, and Princess Dowager of Great Britain. Recent research has explored how in fulfilling these roles they made major contributions to the arts, the development of new models of philanthropy and social welfare, the promotion and support of advances in science and medicine, as well as trade and industry, and the furthering of imperial ambition. While local contexts may have conditioned the forms such initiatives took, their objectives were rooted in a European tradition of elite female empowerment.
This symposium, Enlightened Princesses: Britain and Europe, 1700–1820, will bring together eminent academicians and museum scholars to investigate the role played by royal women-electresses, princesses, queens consort, reigning queens, and empresses — in the shaping of court culture and politics in Europe of the long eighteenth century.

This panel examines how fashion – original, unusual, peculiar, or even outlandish – preoccupied the Victorian cultural imagination. Papers might investigate eccentric fashion’s role in specific genres; its portrayal in the Victorian periodic press, advertising, or conduct manuals; the bachelor girl’s or the dandy’s nonconformity in attire; dress as gender or status markers; how costume determines, camouflages, or liberates; the fin-de-siècle aesthete’s couture; ways the outré became a normatively modish for the middle-class Victorian consumer.

This conference seeks to reassess the history of Haute Couture by taking into consideration its inherent contradictions: the tensions between couture as both commerce and art; couture’s relationship with ready-to-wear and mass produced clothing; and contemporary questions relating to industrialization, “fast fashion,” and the impact of the digital on the artisanal.

Garments reflect the priorities of local and international economies,
collective and personal inclinations, religious norms and conversions. These materialities are shaped by global flows of cloth and beads, furs, ready-made and second-hand apparel, in dynamic processes of fashion exchange. Dress is a charged cultural instrument, as evident in colonial and decolonization processes, social and political agendas, animated by cross-cultural and commercial flows, industrial and institutional innovations.

  • 30 May to 2 June 2013. Lala de Dios, president of ETN wrote: Dear ETN colleagues, after the Kaunas ETN Assembly in 2011, 2013 will be the year of our next biannual meeting. I am very pleased to announce that the Asociación de Creadores Textiles de Madrid (Actm) has offered to host the ETN General Assembly 2013 in Madrid. This year the Actm will be 25th years old. To celebrate this event we are planning a Textile Meeting with the usual layout of exhibitions, workshops and lectures, in addition a possible specialized textile market. This meeting would profit from the fact that ‘Suave’, our international juried textile fashion accessories exhibition which is now a triennial was due for this year, providing us with at least one open international event. We were also cooperating with our Portuguese friends from ‘Contextile’ to or-ganize ‘Peninsulares 2013’, to be held in Madrid and Guimaräes focusing on Iberian textile art and design. We would like to have some kind of joint collaboration with our sister network Redtextilia, the Iberoamerican Textile Network.
Those attending the Assembly will be given the chance to present their activities at the open sessions during our meeting. At the moment I am writing this I cannot give you more details yet. Bilingual information will be published as soon as we have concrete information to offer you at We are also prepared to help with hotel accommodation and further travelling. Those of you interested, please, send a mail and your name will be included in a mailing list to receive information about the programme.
    Lala de Dios,

  • 4 to 7 April 2013 First International Symposium for young lace makers in Pavia, Italy (south of Milan) "Doily-Free Zone: Raising the status of lace and lace making" . This symposium coincides with Milan Design Week.
The symposium will be divided into three categories; Lace and Tradition, Lace and Design and Lace and Art and we are accepting proposals for papers, works of art and design, and workshops related to these themes.
Proposals are to be sent to the attention of Angharad Rixon at no later than Saturday 31st March 2012 and the successful applicants will be contacted by Sunday 15th April 2012. A complete programme for the symposium and related events will be available in June 2012.
For the purposes of this meeting we define lace as a fabric in which the open spaces are as fundamental to the design as the solid areas and where this is interplay of holes is an intrinsic part of the fabric’s structure, for this reason we will not accept proposals based on die or laser cut “lace patterns”.
All lace makers who wish to present work or research papers must be under the age of 40 at the time of the symposium, this is not meant as discrimination but is rather an attempt to focus on the work of a generation which for various reasons is not associated with the major guilds and organizations. The symposium, however, will be open to all.

The conference will focus on the interrelation between (social) history and the history of style. Looking at the related idea of “haptic space”, formulated by the Viennese art historian Alois Riegl, who also worked as curator of textiles at the Museum of Applied Arts, the critical involvement of (post-)formalist art practice and discourse in the debate about the dominance of the optical will thus be contrasted with specific phenomena within formalist modern art and 8 art history. The presentations will discuss the traditional and current status of textiles as intermedia regarding the materiality of transsubjective forms of aesthetic production, cultural knowledge and social relations. -

    More about the notion UNITEXT
Please send the application to (max 25 MB per e-mail); subject: UNITEXT proposal till 15th September, 2012
The 9th Kaunas Biennial UNITEXT will create conditions for immediate collisions of an artwork and a spectator, allowing the experience of art as a universal text. Curators of the exhibition together with artists will pursue a concept that is new and unfamiliar in a cultural context and will consolidate it by presenting practical examples. We will go into the question of a unitext, which is the latest link in work -> text -> intertext -> hypertext -> unitext semiotic chain of artistic field.
According to the consistency of this chain the UNITEXT exhibition claims a privilege to present novel ideas about the art at the level of structural and notional revelation. The suggestion is to perceive unitext in this chain as a universal artistic language, which unifies different experiences and concepts. The exhibition will provide a unique voice for each artwork instead of handling this task to explanatory texts. We believe artworks themselves are suggestive, influential and complete enough. We invite artists to present works experiences of which are based on a direct confrontation with an object / space / semantic field. We invite to present unitexts, which are seen through intuition, materiality, spontaneity, sensuality, feeling, here and now experiences.
